Growing up in a small town in IL, I have fond memories of the great variety and delicious donuts that Dunkin Donuts served. Later in high school, I enjoyed their hot coffee too … and what’s better than delicious hot coffee and donuts?! It’ll make a kid out of anyone.

Well, just this February, Dunkin Donuts opened a new store in Irvine just miles from where I live. And how could I not share this experience with my two granddaughters?

When they stayed over last weekend, I pulled up some pictures of Dunkin Donuts on the internet and I showed them the original commercial “time to make the donuts,” and told them all about it. I asked them if they wanted to visit the donut shop and I could see their excitement written all over their tiny faces.

So we arrived early on Saturday morning to a long drive-thru line and hardly a parking spot to be found. They did have some staff help direct traffic and the girls said one of the staff was real pretty with her hair in a pony-tail like theirs and smiling the whole time.

So in we go to a long line and when we finally get to order, we are told that they’re out of the white frosted sprinkled donuts and the plain white bagels and … they had no bags for our drinks. Honestly, the girls didn’t like their donuts and didn’t finish them. I was disappointed.

We leave with our bags and on the way back home we stop at the Donut Star, a small mom & pop donut shop. They do have the white frosted sprinkled donuts, plain white bagels and the old-fashioned milk chocolate bars (one of my favorites) and they were less expensive than the DD and they had bags for the drinks. Can you believe it, the girls prefer bagels over donuts – not me. wink, wink…

Could it be that the new store was still working out all the kinks? Did they get overrun with orders? I don’t know, but it goes to show that bigger is not necessarily better. And it also shows that there’s a reason we cherish those childhood recollections; they can’t always be duplicated.

And here’s a cutie for you: What do you see when the Pillsbury Doughboy bends over? Doughnuts.

Love ya, PW.
